Consumer Brands Overview

The six sub-divisions falling under the Consumer Brands division at Foodcorp are Grocery (previously Nola), Milling (previously Ruto Mills), Baking (previously Sunbake), Beverage (previously Mageu Number One), Fishing (previously Marine products) and Pie (previously Piemans Pantry).



GROCERY consists of a portfolio of well recognised brands with leading market positions. Your parents and grandparents have been dunking Ouma rusks since 1939. Your kids love Yum Yum peanut butter, you’ve tasted Nola mayonnaise and your pets eat Bobtail, Dogmor, Bobcat and Catmor. We produce a wide range of grain and edible oil based products, sorghum, salad dressings, dips and spreads.

 

BEVERAGE has been the number one producer in SA of mageu for 20 years, the popular non-alcoholic, high protein health drink made from maize, sugar and water. We sell more than 50 million litres each year under the Mageu No 1, Smooth, Phuzimpilo and Mnandi brands, primarily distributed to the people by Danone-Clover.

 

MILLING is a wheat and maize milling operation. With around 300 000 tons of flour and over 100 000 tons of maize meal sold annually, it’s not surprising that Foodcorp operates the largest milling complex in the country, based in Pretoria. We also supply all of the flour used in the Baking division, and most of the flour used in our Pie and Speciality division. Our brands: Tafelberg, A1, 5 Star and Safari.

 

BAKING produces hundreds of thousands of breads, rolls and buns to a hungry South Africa every day under the Sunbake brand. Next time you’re shopping in Woolworths, the country’s premier food retailer, that speciality loaf you’ve popped in your trolley may well be one of our private label brands. We operate eight bakeries and distribute our products in four provinces.

 

FISHING operates in the pelagic, hake and lobster fishing sector. We have been granted long-term quotas, for between 10 and 15 years, by the South African government. Our Glenryck canned pilchards are number two in the market, and sell around 800 000 tonnes annually. Our lobsters are snapped up by consumers in the Far East, and our deep-water hake is sold in Europe under the Marpro brand.

 

PIES are sold either frozen (unbaked), baked and ready to eat, and baked (chilled). We sell over 11 million pies every year through our Piemans Pantry and Private Label ranges. You’ll find them at your local supermarket, and at major forecourts. Our pies come in traditional oval shapes with flavours like steak-and-kidney, to cheeseburger-type pies, specialities such as spare rib pies, and a more premium-priced gourmet selection.
