Speciality Division
The Speciality Division

The Speciality sub-division produces a range of superior convenience food products for South Africa’s premier food retailer, Woolworths.

This include certain biltong products, sandwiches, dairy desserts, salads, party foods, hamburgers, wraps, rotis, rye breads, various flavoured flat breads, ready-to-eat garlic breads and a range of heat-and-eat bread products. In addition we also produce a selection of cakes, including Danish pastries, croissants, pancakes and cupcakes.

Speciality manufactures this product range in three facilities – speciality breads and cakes in two Gauteng-based facilities, while the remaining range is manufactured in a single multi-disciplinary facility located east of Pretoria, which includes baking, meat preparation, cooking and the preparation of dairy desserts and cut vegetables. This factory is in excess of 12 000 square metres.

In December 2009, the Speciality sub-division was awarded an ISO 22 000 certification. This makes Specialty premium prepared foods a pioneer in local industry, being the first major Woolworths supplier to have won this prestigious certification. ISO 22 000 is a global criterion developed by the International Organisation for Standardization dealing with food safety. The ISO 22 000 Food Safety Management System, which incorporates HACCP, recognises any particular organisation which has a proven ability to control food safety hazards, thereby ensuring that all food products it manages are safe for consumption when they reach shelves.

This is especially noteworthy in the case of the Speciality sub-division as it deals with such a diverse range of convenience foods – from baked goods to ready-to-eat meals and hand-crafted dairy desserts.

The Speciality sub-division’s products are distributed by third-party contractors to the Woolworths distribution centres in Johannesburg and Durban. These products are then distributed by Woolworths to individual stores across South Africa. The products typically have a short shelf life and require strict temperature control to ensure that the quality is maintained

Speciality also produces a range of superior quality baked confectionery products, specialising in a morning goods range for the major South African retailers. These products include rye bread, garlic bread, naan bread, muffins, pancakes and waffles. The division is also the only supplier of English Muffins produced in South Africa, with specialised manufacturing facilities.

These products are manufactured in a Gauteng based facility.
